Better WiFi for everyone!
Did you know there is a solution to your poor WiFi performance?
Do you ever find one day your WiFi is running perfectly then the next minute nothing?
There are many factors that can cause these performance issues, these can include the distance from your WiFi access point or modem, the type of device you are using to connect to the WiFi, the number of connected WiFi devices and even your neighbour’s WiFi.
Let’s focus on two of the issues above and see what can be done about them.
Distance from the WiFi access point:
The further away from your modem or wireless access point you are the weaker the wireless signal is which results in a slower and often an unreliable connection.
Your average ISP supplied modem does an ok job of covering a typical single story house. Often your modem or wireless access point isn’t located where you want to use the WiFi. The easiest solution here is a wireless repeater, this will extend your wireless coverage and will cost somewhere between $79 and $150. You will then be able to connect to your normal wireless network when in range of the modem and to a second wireless network when you are further away. It works, but it’s not the best solution.
How can this be improved?
Multiple wireless access points that behave like one or higher power/longer range access points. Check out some of our wireless access points available here then give us a call to discuss your particular needs.
Your neighbour’s WiFi:
There is only so much space available when it comes to wireless channels and there’s a good chance both you and your neighbour’s are using the same wireless channel or they are overlapping.
Android users can check out USurvey or WiFi Analyzer on the Play Store to see what is going on around you and see how congested things are. Unfortunately, there are no such tools available for iOS users.
What to do with your new found information?
The easiest step is to use 5Ghz wireless where possible (just remember the range of 5Ghz is not quite as far as 2.4Ghz) often you will see YourWiFi and YourWiFi-5G try connecting to the 5G network and see if this helps as there is far less congestion there. Secondly, if you do need to use 2.4Ghz wireless find the least congested channel and change your wireless access point to use this channel instead.

The same principals apply to businesses. You want your staff or guests to have the best experience possible when using your wireless network, often incorrectly configured wireless networks leave you disconnected when roaming around for 15 seconds at a time, imagine cutting that down to around 0.6 seconds.
